Entanglements and Separations
Modernity, Memory and Identity in South-East Europe Series

Coordinators: Öktem Kerem*, Yosmaoğlu Ipek Kocaömer*

Description

This collection will be the first comprehensive publication on the Jews of Turkey with a contemporary focus. It brings together scholars of history, political science, sociology and, human geography to appraise the past, present and future of this community at a time when its long-term survival is at stake due to increased anti-Semitism and migration. With this scope, Entanglements, will both be a handbook on the Jews of Turkey, as well as a critical contribution to the debate on the Turkish Republic as a project of modernity. The collection speaks to a number of interrelated fields of inquiry, spanning from Ottoman and Turkish Republican history, Turkish Studies and Jewish Studies to Southeast European and Middle Eastern Studies, expanding also into the literatures on citizenship, migration, diasporas and ideologies. A particular selling point of this project is the group of contributors, which brings together leading names in the field of Sephardi Jewish history and Turkish studies, as well as younger scholars, who build their papers on fresh fieldwork experience.

*Kerem Öktem is Professor for Southeast European Studies and Modern Turkey, University of Graz, Austria.
