“Balat a Galata – Vidas Djudias de Los Anyos 1950 / Balat to Galata – Jewish Lives of the 1950s” – 2020 – Libra Kitap publishing house

“Balat to Galata – Jewish lives of the 1950’s is a joint effort by Roz Kohen and Betti Özyel. Both authors grew up in İstanbul listening to the adults at their homes speak in Judeo-Spanish. They write about a bygone era of Jewish lives of the 1950s in neighborhoods where Jews lived: Balat and Galata. Both Judeo-Spanish and its English translation of the stories are included to record and preserve one of the Jewish languages that survived in the diaspora for five hundred years.”

Roz Kohen was born and raised in İstanbul, Turkey. She attended the Jewish Lycée, Bene Berit (B’nai B’rith) in the Galata region and graduated from the American College for Girls – Arnavutköy. She has lived in the United States since 1981. Her most recent degree is in Information Technology-MLS, Masters in Library Science. Currently she is the manager of one of St. Louis County Library branches in St. Louis, Missouri.
