Edited by  Mehmet Beşikçi, Selçuk Aksin Somel , Alexandre Toumarkine, December 2020

The First World War represented the first great catastrophe of the 20th century, and the Ottoman Empire played a part in it. The Ottoman scenario witnesses the destruction and at the same time the reconstruction of the modern Middle East. This volume focuses on individual lives and relates them to economic, demographic, gender and artistic conditions. The reader encounters a wide variety of individuals, from ordinary soldiers, peasants, women and orphans to artists who had to fight for survival amidst the brutal circumstances of an all-out war. The volume contains three parts: 1. Wartime mobilisation policies and their social and economic aspects; 2. Demographic changes, minorities and gender roles at the war; 3. Memory, representation and the end of war.
