Greece’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) responded to statements made by Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan concerning the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, emphasizing that “the delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and the continental shelf is the only difference between Greece and Turkey.”

“Consequently, revisionist positions and proposals are universally rejected,” the sources stressed, continuing: “Greece remains committed to the principles of International Law and, always guided by national interests, desires to continue structured dialogue with Turkey on the basis of these principles.”

Addressing the status of the Muslim minority: “Regarding the status of the Muslim minority, the Treaty of Lausanne clearly defines the character of the minority in Thrace as religious, to whose members Greece grants full equality before the law and full political rights,” the MFA sources concluded.

Turkey’s Fidan statements

Earlier, the Turkish Foreign Minister advocated for a “just sharing” in the Eastern Mediterranean, adding, among other things, that “we support examining all disputes in the Aegean as a whole.”

“We continue to uphold the view of a just sharing in the Eastern Mediterranean. We support the examination of all Aegean disputes as a whole, to find a solution within the framework of international law and good neighborly relations in a substantive and constructive manner,” the head of Turkish diplomacy stated.

Fidan also mentioned, “We continue to wish for the maintenance of the positive agenda in our relations with Greece.”

In another part of his statement, Fidan remarked: “We are taking our steps regarding the support of the rights of the Turkish minority of Western Thrace, and if necessary, we will do so with reciprocity.”
