Turkish main opposition CHP leader Özgür Özel on Dec. 9 met with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and took the stage at the SPD conference in Berlin. Özel said, as social democrats, they advocated Turkey having better relations with both Germany and the European Union.

Turkish main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Özgür Özel on Dec. 9 German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during his visit to Germany.
In a social media post, Özel said “As social democrats, we advocate our country having better relations with both Germany and the European Union. We will work to improve our relations.”
CHP General Secretary Selin Sayek Böke was also present at the meeting.
Özel was paying a visit to the Social Democratic Party’s (SPD) party conference in the capital Berlin.
He also took the stage during the conference and called for action « to stop the tragedy in Gaza. »
« We reiterate our call to comply with United Nations resolutions and international law, to immediately stop attacks that cause civilian deaths, and to ensure a permanent ceasefire. We believe that the solution to problems and conflicts all over the world is not through violence and war, but through dialogue and cooperation, » he said and endorsed the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s stance regarding the issue.
« Social democratic politics, especially us European social democrats and socialists, need to produce strong and determined responses to all the challenges, » he added.
